The original Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System officially turned 30 this past Saturday and yet Nintendo as a company didn’t do a thing to honor this milestone. Fortunately, some Metroid fans did what Nintendon’t and paid tribute to the franchise in style with a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus.
Metroid II was originally released in 1991 for the Game Boy. Project AM2R, the team behind the remake, spent six years making the game look, sound, and play better, and they finally released their creation on August 6, 2016, exactly 30 years to the day that the original Metroid was released in Japan.
Those who have played Metroid II will notice that the remake is quite a bit different from the game they remember. Project AM2R took the faster-paced gameplay of Metroid: Zero Mission for the Game Boy Advance and mixed it with the atmosphere of Super Metroid. They also added some new features:
- Metroid Zero Mission style gameplay
- Map system
- Updated enemy AI
- New areas
- Challenging Metroid fights
- Stackable beam system
- Completely redrawn enemy and Metroid sprites
- Log system with non-intrusive narrative
- High quality soundtrack
Of course, Nintendo being Nintendo, the developers were hit with a takedown notice less than 24 hours after the game went live.

Right now, Project AM2R is looking into whether or not the DMCA notice is a fake, but in the meantime, they’ve had to take down the AM2R file. Fortunately, you can see some gameplay here while this whole mess is sorted out:
