Big Show Says WrestleMania 33 Match With Shaq Could Be His Last

The Big Show made his wrestling debut as “The Giant” for WCW in 1995, and won the WCW World Title in his very first match. He’s been a part of WWE since a much-publicized jump in early 1999, and a fixture on WWE programming ever since. Recently, he’s been showered with chants of “Please Retire”, and while we wouldn’t put it quite that way (although at least the fans are saying “Please”), the fact of the matter is that Show has been a regular character on TV for over 20 years at this point, and his career is quite clearly winding down. While he has made cameo appearances on Raw and Smackdown in 2016, his presence has definitely been scaled back in the past few months, and it looks like the inevitable might be closing in.

However, at this year’s ESPY Awards, cameras caught The Big Show challenging legendary NBA player and star of Shazam Shaquille O’Neal to a match at WrestleMania 33, a match that Shaq appeared to accept. The two faced off at the most recent WrestleMania as part of the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal, and a match between the World’s Largest Athlete and the gigantic Shaq has been the subject of speculation for years. And according to a recent radio interview, that long-awaited match might be the last one for The Big Show.

In that interview, Show reportedly said that he has been spending all of his time getting in shape for his Mania match with O’Neal so that he can go out with a bang, which would seem to imply that he plans for that match to be his swan song as a full-time performer. While we have no doubt that we’ll see Show again after that in occasional appearances, and it will be nearly impossible to find someone to replace him in his very particular role, after a career as long and storied as Show’s, he deserves to go out with a big match at WrestleMania. Although given his record in celebrity matches at WrestleMania, maybe Show should have picked a match he’d have a better chance of winning.
