Exciting Dead by Daylight news just keeps coming this week. Developer Behaviour Interactive has unveiled the new chapter for Dead by Daylight, Silent Hill, and now the studio’s revealed a brand-new feature that’ll let survivors and killers get together with their pals in-game regardless of platform is on the way. That’s right – cross-play is due to land by the end of 2020.
DBD producer Stefan Beauchamp-Daniel has explained in the horror game’s fourth anniversary stream (included below) that, first, “cross-friends” – one of the asymmetric survival game’s “most asked-for and requested features – is “finally coming to the game this year”. This will work via the addition of a “search feature and add friends features”, and will let you find your Dead by Daylight pals from other games and “add them directly to your friends list”.
“On top of that,” the dev continues, “we’re also adding cross-play” – and this will feature as “part of the base matchmaking experience” in Dead by Daylight.
Beauchamp-Daniel explains that the studio hopes grouping players together across platforms will not only help players match with others closer in terms in of ranking more easily, but also throw something new into the mix, gameplay-wise.
“The other added benefit that we’re hoping cross-play is going to bring is that we’re going to diversify the meta between different platforms,” he says, suggesting players might need to try some new techniques against players from different platforms.
As for the timeline, senior product manager Jérôme Nguyen Van Long explains the new cross-friends and cross-play features will release in two waves, starting with the former’s launch on PC (Steam and the Windows Store) first, followed by a release on consoles (it seems the new mobile release won’t be included). At this point, he says, “all these platforms will be able to play together.”
“We expect to have all these platforms being available in the cross-play and the cross-friend features environment before the end of this year.”
