Shadow Stones are set to appear in Fortnite with the arrival of the new season. Fortnite Season 6 kicks off today, but Epic has offered something of a preview in the v6.00 patch notes, which arrived this morning.
As ever, there are new locations and cosmetics included in the new season, but there’s also something we’ve not seen before. It seems that the runes that Kevin the Cube printed in various locations across the map weren’t just for show – they threw up those anti-gravity domes, of course, but they’ve also spawned mysterious new Shadow Stones in the areas around those runes.
Those are particularly reminiscent of Hop Rocks – consumables that arrived in the game at the beginning of season 4, and proved the starting point for several of the game’s most movement-friendly changes since then. An image from the patch notes shows a collection of shadow stones (which look like small version of the cube) hovering ominously above the ground. If you look closely, you can also see that the area around that rune is now twisted and decayed, offering some hints about the new season’s map and theme.
According to those patch notes, using a Shadow Stone will send you into ‘Shadow Form’ for a short time. While you’re in Shadow Form, you’ll be invisible when stationary, but unable to use your weapons. When you move, you’ll still be hard to see, but enemies will be able to follow a Shadow Trail.
You’ll also get increased movespeed, and be able to jump further without taking fall damage. You might not be able to fire a weapon in Shadow Form, but you will get a special ‘Phase’ ability, allowing you to boost forward, passing through objects as you travel. Shadow Form usually lasts for 45 seconds, but you can get out of it early by aiming down your sights.
If you can’t wait for the new season, you should check out the Fortnite patch notes 6.0, for a run down of everything arriving today. It won’t bring the new season to you any faster, admittedly, but it’s always good to be prepared.
