Shadow of the Tomb Raider is out next week, bringing the reboot trilogy to an appropriate third act climax. If you’ve missed the story so far – and let’s be real, with years between each game and a lot of lore buried in collectables, the details might’ve gotten fuzzy – Square Enix has provided a nifty new trailer breaking down exactly what happened in the last two games so you’ll be up to speed on the new one.
2012’s Tomb Raider, of course, has Lara Croft picking up her father’s treasure hunting habits and sailing off in search of adventure. A shipwreck and a band of cultists on mysterious island mean that the whole adventure gets bit more violent than she was expecting, though, and the evil spirit of an ancient Japanese queen certainly doesn’t help.
While she’s escaping that island, clues begin to surface around an organization called Trinity, which properly makes its debut in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Here Lara’s looking for an ancient prophet and the secret to eternal life, while confronting that whole “mortality” thing and the untimely death of her father. Naturally, that means exploring a lost city filled with undying warriors.
The proper, 12 minute recap video will extrapolate on all that for you with plenty of nice reminders about all the significant characters and recaps if some of those games’ best moments.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is precisely one week away, and will have Lara continuing the fight against Trinity while digging up the usual assortment of ancient secrets in the jungles of South America. Find out how the game’s taking lessons from Deus Ex, and how the new difficulty options promise to shake up the experience.
