Keanu Reeves has been the talk of the videogaming contingent of LA ever since he appeared on stage during the Xbox keynote address at E3 2019. Frankly, we’re still a bit stunned even now, but we’re all going to have to get a bit more used to him being around when Keanu Reeves plays Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077.
This is because Silverhand is dead, probably, and lives as a digital ghost inside your head. If you skip to 3:45 in the cinematic trailer – which you can watch in full further down this article – you can see the character’s ethereal body flicker in and out of view, as if it’s a technical glitch. Reeves essentially lives in your brain and follows your throughout your time in Cyberpunk 2077. He even taunts you when you’re agonising over the character creator: “You really think they give a rat’s dick how you look”.
He might be mean – or at least a touch curmudgeonly – but we love him anyway. You’ve got to sympathise with him, actually: Johnny Silverhand, one of the biggest names in the franchise’s lore, died in 2024, over half a century before Cyberpunk 2077 is set to take place. Even more curiously, an in-game radio mentions that it’s “been a year since Johnny Silverhand’s last ride”.
Naturally, Cyberpunk 2027 could be playing around with the world’s wider lore, but Keanu’s role in practice is to pop up to chat anywhere as a chip implanted in V’s head. Silverhand’s motivations and the decisions you’ll make involving him are unclear as yet, but hopefully he keeps the rude comments to a minimum. We can’t all age as well as you, Keanu.
As to the burning question of whether you can romance Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077, we don’t know yet; CD Projekt Red answered understandably thirsty fans on Twitter by saying “we don’t want to share too much”. Arguably Reeves appearing in digital form complicates matters in that regard but, since this is a dystopian, technologically-enhanced future, we imagine there are all sorts of exotic new ways to get your kicks.
Get physical: US players can get the Cyberpunk 2077 collector’s edition
The main takeaway from this is that you’re going to have to get used to Johnny Silverhand hurling insults at you for the presumably many hours the game will take to beat. Anyway, that doesn’t seem to be putting anybody off: ahead of the looming Cyberpunk 2077 release date, it’s already a Steam bestseller, and one of the most wishlisted games on the storefront. Here’s hoping for some more colourful imagery when we finally get to dive into the gritty Night City.
