Insomniac Games has been well known prior to their latest massive release, Spider-Man. The development studio was founded in 1994 and since then it delivered gamers with Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, along with the Resistance series. However, all of their previous work was something that they created rather than working on another licensed IP. That changed when the development studio worked with Marvel in order to bring fans a brand new Spider-Man adventure.
Spider-Man officially launched today and its already gaining a plethora of positive reception from both critics and fans alike. So it may have some people wondering if this would be the last time the development team works with another established IP that is not directly their own.
Speaking to Fandom, community director James Stevenson gave some insight as to how the development studio was able to handle Marvel’s Spider-Man and their potential for working on additional IPs. According to remarks made by James Stevenson, the development studio didn’t have to deal with any issues regarding in making their own game with Marvel’s property.
It seems that Marvel was easy to work with as the company essentially opened up the archive showcasing all of the different narratives Spider-Man has been taken through. Insomniac Games just had to pick up what characters and stories they enjoyed most for their video game.
“Marvel Wasn’t Putting up roadblocks or anything like that, it was more from the perspective of wanting to help us make a great Spider-Man game.”
When asked if Insomniac Games would continue to work with other IPs, it looks as if things are positive which may result in the development team working on other Marvel IPs or continue on a sequel.
“Sure we’d be open to another licensed game. I feel like the question hints to whether there are downsides to it. It’s different of course; you have other people involved who can tell you whether something is on-brand or off-brand, which is different for us than, say, working on a Ratchet & Clank.”
“But it’s not like we wanted to go too far away from what makes Spider-Man great. It had to be an authentic experience, so in some ways, it’s helpful having extra people around who know the character so well and are pushing you to make things better. Working with Marvel probably drove us to be better than we can be when we’re working on our own thing.”
As mentioned, Spider-Man is currently out now exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
