Ever since the Hardy Boyz made their surprise return to the WWE back at WrestleMania, fans have been hoping they would unleash their Broken Brilliance. While a legal battle over the gimmick’s intellectual property rights has kept that from happening so far, the Hardys did enjoy a lengthy run as Tag Team champions. Now, however, the Hardyz are being derailed — temporarily at least — by the news that Jeff has a major shoulder injury that will require surgery to repair.
According to WWE.com, Jeff suffered a torn rotator cuff last week on Raw during the Six-Pack Challenge match (although Dave Meltzer reports that it may have actually happened as long ago as the Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view, with Jeff working through the injury since then).
“Jeff is dealing with a rotator cuff tear right now,” said WWE Senior Ringside Physician Dr. Stephen Daquino. “It’s a full thickness tear of his supraspinatus tendon and a couple of other areas in the shoulder. He’s going to go for evaluation and probably for surgery next week.”
Hardy added that he also tore his labrum and that he initially thought he dislocated his shoulder during the match.
“Once they get in there, they’ll figure out more about what they have to repair,” said Hardy. “But for sure, the rotator cuff has to be repaired, and then they’ll look at the labrum when they get in there.”
Jeff said the news was “depressing” but tried to stay positive, promising to “come back better than ever with a brand-new shoulder.” He also talked about the possibility of remaining an on-screen character as he recovers, even though he obviously can’t wrestle until he is healed.
Although everyone is different, most surgeries for torn rotator cuffs take anywhere from three-to-six months to heal and rehab. And that’s for an average person, who hasn’t been putting their body through the extreme punishment that the Hardyz have endured over their long wrestling career.
Here’s wishing Jeff a speedy and healthy recovery, so he can get back in the ring as soon as possible!
