Since its original release in September 2013, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V has gone on to become one of the best-selling video games of all time, thanks in large part to the game’s enormously successful online component. However, while the company made the right moves with GTA Online, many have criticized Rockstar’s decision to not release any additional single-player story DLC for the game. As it turns out, the developer’s reasoning is really quite simple: they felt releasing this type of content was neither “possible or necessary.”
Speaking to Game Informer [via IGN], Rockstar director of design Imran Sarwar explained that while the studio may still release story expansions for its future games, GTA V was viewed as too broad and taxing a project for it to receive one.
“With GTA V, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very, very complete. It was three games in one. The next-gen versions took a year of everyone’s time to get right, then the online component had a lot of potential, but to come close to realizing that potential also sucked up a lot of resources. And then there are other games – in particular Red Dead Redemption II.
“The combination of these three factors means for this game, we did not feel single-player expansions were either possible or necessary, but we may well do them for future projects.”
Sarwar went onto elaborate, explaining that the decision to not make single-player DLC “was not really a conscious decision, it’s just what happened.” Interestingly, Rockstar announced back in 2013 that the game’s story would receive a “substantial” story expansion the following year.
Fans had good reason for expecting Rockstar to eventually release single-player DLC for GTA V, as its predecessor, 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV, received two substantial chapters in the form of The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. For GTA V, Rockstar clearly prioritized focusing on the game’s online component with multiple DLC packs and microtransactions, but it’s interesting to hear Sarwar say that the game’s lack of additional story content was more a result of not having enough resources rather than a concerted effort to focus on GTA Online above all else (though considering how much money it continues to make, that would certainly be understandable).
Sarwar stresses that Rockstar still puts a ton of effort into its games’ single-player elements (as evidenced by what we’ve seen of Red Dead Redemption 2 so far), but it remains to be seen whether that game’s online portion will receive all the focus post-launch. It would be a shame to not get something on the level of the first Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare DLC for the sequel …
