Sony says that it’s not opting in for Fortnite crossplay because the game is best experienced on the PlayStation 4. Speaking at the IFA technology show in Berlin, the company’s CEO, Kenchiro Yoshido, stated that “PlayStation is the best place to play” Epic’s battle royale.
Fortnite is one of the most accessible games on the planet at the moment, with players able to access it on PC, console (including Nintendo Switch), and mobile. With some periphery-related caveats, crossplay could theoretically exist across almost all of those platforms. Sony, however, has repeatedly refused to allow its own console to be included within the wider system. Their stance was so severe that Switch players found themselves unable to use PlayStation accounts on Nintendo’s machine.
The reason for that, it turns out, is that Sony believe the best way to experience the arcadey battle royale is on their own console. At least, that’s what Yoshido had to say when the subject – which had an impact on Sony’s share price – came up at the tech show last week (via NintendoLife).
Speaking at the event, Yoshido said that “on cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief.”
Yoshido seemed to backpedal on that – somewhat bold – statement very quickly, however. He went on to say that “we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform.”
Now, I know that as a writer for a PC-specific site, I might be slightly biased, but I’m very much of the opinion that PC is your best bet when it comes to Fortnite. For one thing, cross-play seems to be generally easier, but more importantly, mouse and keyboard (and a high frame-rate) is the best way to play pretty much any competitive shooter. Don’t @ me.
