One way to keep a giant gameworld feeling fresh and full of things to do is to create a process whereby the game can generate new content on its own. The other way is to write all of them yourself. CD Projekt Red is going the latter route with Cyberpunk 2077, with every quest and objective hand-crafted by the development team.

CD Projekt Red surprised the world when Keanu Reeves took the stage to announce he’d be playing Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 during Microsoft’s Xbox E3 briefing earlier this year. And when the creator of the Cyberpunk universe and tabletop roleplaying system Mike Pondsmith found out, he was surprised too – although perhaps not quite as much as the developers had hoped.
A few months ago, CD Projekt Red announced that it would show Cyberpunk 2077’s full E3 2019 gameplay demo to the world at PAX West (which is now just a week away). Plans have now changed, but you’re still going to get to see new gameplay footage next week – just a bit less of it than we were expecting.
If the release of upcoming dystopian RPG Cyberpunk 2077 next year wasn’t exciting enough, you’ll now have another way to get stuck into the world of Night City. Developer CD Projekt Red has just announced that it’s releasing a standalone Cyberpunk 2077 card game next year.
Cyberpunk as a genre features some delightfully wild costumes, and Cyberpunk 2077 sticks with that tradition. CD Projekt Red wants to get the cosplay scene started on the right foot, so the company’s running a cosplay contest over the months leading up to the Cyberpunk 2077 release date which will award top entrants with a share of a $40,000 prize pool.
RPGs often include morality systems that add an extra dimension to your experience of their worlds. The original Mass Effects’ Paragon and Renegade points, for example, had some pretty big consequences for your Commander Shepard. The Fable series’ alignment trackers shaped the gameplay and even your appearance – demonic horns and glowing halos have been on offer, depending on your choices. However, one of the biggest new RPGs on the horizon will be a bit different – Cyberpunk 2077 will skip the morality system altogether.
By now, you probably know that CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is based on a tabletop RPG, and earlier this year we learned that the two products do indeed share a single timeline. But there’s a lot of space between Cyberpunk 2020 and 2077, and a lot of lore to run down there – which is why a new tabletop release is set to launch later this year.
June 21, 2019 Cyberpunk 2077 will feature long-term relationships with their own plotlines, Witcher 3-style.
At Microsoft’s E3 presentation, a new Cyberpunk 2077 trailer revealed Keanu Reeves in the role of Johnny Silverhand. Then he appeared on stage, a fan shouted “you’re breathtaking,” he shouted the same thing in response, and then revealed the Cyberpunk 2077 release date. The internet has not let this moment go, and now fans have declared that this moment should be memorialised in the game itself.
Cyberpunk 2077 offers a big city to explore, and that means you’ll need a ride to get around. We learned last year that you can steal vehicles and drive them through Night City, but now we have a lot more detail on how you can keep and manage your future car collection – and what happens when your favourite vehicle gets lost.
