The Outer Worlds – no not Wilds, Worlds, the open world RPG Fallout-like (I’m coining the term) – is heading towards its October 25 release date. Fans and critics alike have been watching and waiting to see if the game is everything it promised to be, and now that the embargo has lifted, we’ve got a round up of what critics think.

Unless you’re dead-set on waiting for the Steam version, it’s just one week from take-off on Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds. As such, the developer has released the system requirements for the open-world space RPG, and they probably won’t have you needing an urgent upgrade to play.
A little under a year ago, Obsidian Entertainment was acquired by Microsoft. A month after that, the studio announced The Outer Worlds, a sci-fi, space exploration RPG that’s become one of the most anticipated games of 2019. Only a couple of weeks from launch, Obsidian has talked about how beneficial the Microsoft buy-out has been, and the freedom it still has as a company.
The Tokyo Games Show is underway this weekend, and there’s new footage on display from The Outer Worlds, Obsidian’s upcoming Wild West-flavored spacefaring RPG. The build is for the TGS audience, which means the UI is in Japanese, but it does give you a sense of some moment-to-moment gameplay and character dialogue thanks to the English voiceover.
The nominees for the Best of E3 2019 Game Critics Awards are here, and while we won’t know the results for a few days yet, the real winners are PC gamers. 57 of the nominated games are available on PC, over a dozen more than you’ll find on any other platform – and a flip from last year, when PlayStation 4 led the pack.
We know that upcoming sci-fci RPG The Outer Worlds from Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian will include a Fallout VATS-adjacent system called TTD (Tactical Time Dilation). Used as an aid for aiming weapons at foes, it will have some cool features – as its name implies, it slows time, and also helps you figure out the sweet spots on an enemy’s body to shoot at. What we didn’t know until now is that it has another intriguing feature – you’ll be able to see your targets’ favourite foods.
It looks like upcoming space RPG The Outer Worlds will have plenty of interesting features. You’ll be able to use dialogue skills in combat, lying, intimidating, and persuading foes to win a fight, and sometimes making them flee in the process. You’ll be able to pick ‘aptitudes’ and ‘flaws’ for your character, making them more dynamic. Pretty intriguingly – you’ll also be able to add an alcoholic big-game hunter as a helpful companion.
Former Obsidian writer Chris Avellone has some harsh words to share with his former company over its choice to take an exclusivity deal with Epic, putting The Outer Worlds on their store – and keeping it off of Steam, at least for a year.
In a wide-reaching interview with gamesindustry.biz, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney espoused the need for better developer rates, comparing games to Netflix and accepting his company’s methods are unlikely to please everyone.
