WATCH: ‘Far Cry 5’ Trailer Reveals First Details, Release Date

Ubisoft has released the first official trailer for Far Cry 5, which will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 27, 2018.

As revealed earlier this week, the game is set in the fictional town of Hope County, Montana and will allow players to create their own character, a sherrif’s deputy caught in-between an escalting war between the U.S. Marshal Service and a dangerous religious cult called Eden’s Gate. The principal villains are cult leader Joseph — a man who believes he’s been chosen by God to protect his followers from an imminent government collapse — as well as his brothers Jacob and John, and their half-sister Faith. Joining your character in his or her’s fight against Eden’s Gate are potential allies like Pastor Jerome, whose church has been threatened by the cult; Mary May, whose father was killed by the cult, and Nick Rye, a pilot who wants to do right by his father and grandfather, who both fought in different wars for the US.

“As the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana, players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden’s Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county,” Ubisoft explains in a press release. “Caught off guard and drawn into a power struggle, players must disrupt the carefully laid plans of the Project at Eden’s Gate, and fan the fires of resistance to help liberate the Hope County community and themselves.

“Under siege and cut off from the rest of the world, players will join forces with residents of Hope County and form the Resistance. The fight against the cult will take players to unique locations throughout Hope County that provide different gameplay experiences,” it continues.

“During their journey, players can fly planes to engage cult forces in aerial dogfights across Big Sky Country. While tracking down cult members and gathering resources for survival across farmland, forests, mountains and rivers, players can get behind the wheel of iconic American muscle cars, big rigs, ATVs and boats. Vehicles also provide refuge when under attack by animals or as a way to quickly escape when things don’t go as planned.”

Like pretty much every other open-world game these days, Far Cry 5 gives you a dog companion. Your canine pal will not only attack enemies, but can also pick up weapons off of dead bodies and retrieve them for you. Smart move, Ubisoft. The entire story mode can be played in two-player co-op and there’s also a map editor that will have “new features that add a new dimension to the content created by fans.”

Setting aside the fact that this game’s setting and themes are sure to be quite controversial to some people, Far Cry 5 looks absolutely gorgeous so far and we’re already looking forward to chasing down religious nuts and bears alike on ATVs. We’re sure to see a lot more of the game at E3 in June but as things stand right now, we can’t wait to go to Montana next February.
