Look, we get it. A lot of people don’t like Roman Reigns. He was shoved down our throat as “the guy” even though a huge percentage of fans had no interest seeing him in the main event week after week. His wrestling skills are average (we get it, you do a super man punch and spear) and his promos were laughable at times, even appearing to forget his scripted lines on at least one occasion.
The WWE isn’t giving up on Roman, though, as evidenced by him winning the Elimination Chamber match to earn a WrestleMania matchup against Brock Lesnar. The next night on Raw, Reigns came out and cut a blistering promo about Lesnar’s cushy contract status, accusing him of not respecting the fans and even the entire wrestling industry by only showing up a handful of times each year. He even name dropped UFC president Dana White, who posted a picture of himself and Lesnar on social media over Elimination Chamber weekend.
The best part of this promo? The fact that it blurs the line between real and scripted. While Reigns may have gotten permission to say everyone of those things, it doesn’t mean they aren’t true. Lesnar likely does have breed resentment in the WWE locker room from guys who work 250+ days a year, traversing the globe to do house shows and promotional appearances along with their busy TV schedule. Lesnar, on the other hand, gets millions to show up a dozen times a year and has been allowed to hold the Universal Championship for months, barely defending it.
It will be interesting to see what happens between now and WrestleMania. Lesnar’s contract with the WWE is reportedly set to expire after their annual extravaganza, with his future unclear (will he go back to the UFC or stick with the WWE or retire completely?) Regardless, this promo by Reigns was a breathe of fresh air for his character.
