Traditionally, the main event of a huge wrestling pay-per-view is reserved for a big title match. With seven different individual championships being on the line at Sunday’s WrestleMania 33 (which doesn’t even include the Raw Tag Team titles), you would think that Goldberg vs. Lesnar would end the show, or at least something like Wyatt vs. Orton.
However, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Online, the WWE is actually planning to have The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns headline the card. This has led to much speculation that The Undertaker will indeed retire for good after WrestleMania, since he’s already 52-year-old and only works one or two matches every year. The Undertaker, and his legendary WrestleMania unbeaten streak (current record 23-1), has been synonymous with the event for decades. If this really his last ride (pun intended), then it makes sense to send him off in the main event.
If Meltzer is correct, it won’t be the first time that WrestleMania doesn’t end with the marquee title match. The Rock and John Cena main evented WrestleMania 28 instead of a championship match between CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho. WrestleMania 26 featured The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels in HBK’s final match, which came after Cena vs. Batista for the title. Former NFL star Lawrence “L.T.” Taylor beat the late Bam Bam Bigelow in the main event at WrestleMania 11, rather than Diesel vs. Shawn Michaels finishing the show. Amazingly, a match between Randy Savage and Ric Flair for the WWF Championship was the fifth last (!) match at WrestleMania 8, which was headlined by Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice. The original WrestleMania didn’t even include a match for the WWF championship, instead being main evented by a tag match between Hulk Hogan and Mr. T against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff, with Muhammad Ali as special guest referee.
