For those who have been negatively impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, a boardgames company is hoping to bring at least a little bit of light into your life with its latest offer.
GMT Games – a boardgame publisher that specializes in strategy boardgames and wargame titles – is offering a boardgame or two to individuals who have lost their job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and doing so completely free of charge.
In a statement that came in last week’s company newsletter, GMT Games stated, “We know that this virus, in addition to the threat it poses to our collective health, has had a negative economic impact on many of our customers, as well. As with so many social or economic problems, it’s not within our power to provide big fixes — to restore lost jobs, retirement funds, or lost earning power. But we’ve decided, as we did numerous times in the wake of the 2008 financial meltdown, that we can show support for those of you who have lost jobs by giving you a free game or two.”
To be eligible, you must have lost your job after March 15, 2020. In order to claim your free game, eligible individuals can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, along with “proof or explanation of your job loss.” Be sure to include your address and indicate which GMT Games title(s) you would like. For those based in the United States, you are eligible for two free games, while overseas individuals are eligible for one title. There are plenty of games available on GMT Games’ webstore. However, this offer does exclude Imperial Struggle.
This is an incredibly generous offer from GMT Games – not to mention it’s the second time they’ve offered up free games like this. It may not be much in the grand scheme of things, but the gesture is great in and of itself. Plus, with global shelter-in-place orders still in effect around the world, tabletop boardgames are a wonderful way to stay entertained while staying inside.
