For years, successive generations of Sony’s consoles were homes for renowned spooky franchises like Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, Siren, Silent Hill, Dead Space, or The Last of Us. What about now, though? Let’s discover the most fright-inducing current-gen experiences, the best horror games on PlayStation 5. Enjoy the read!
Ranking of the best PS5 survival horror games in 2024
As usual with these types of lists, our selection is limited to only 10 entries. In other words, we had to tread carefully, selecting only what we considered to be the top horror games on PS5. Consequently, there are definitely many good titles that didn’t make the cut. Perhaps you have your own suggestions; don’t shy away from sharing them in the comments! Without further ado, here’s the list.
10. The Dark Pictures Anthology
As suggested by the title, this is an entire series of games. Currently, the first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology is out, and it consists of four titles that can be described as playable cinematic experiences. The stories are not directly connected with one another, so it’s perfectly fine to play them in any order you wish.
All four games share a similar gameplay structure, which is focused on QTEs and choices that shape the course of the story. The player can usually explore the locations freely, and there are plenty of items to interact with, though don’t expect much gameplay depth. Each of the titles offers a different setting, such as an old ship (Man of Medan), a creepy small town (Little Hope), a buried temple (House of Ashes), or a murder hotel (The Devil in Me), so pick the one that suits your tastes best!
9. Dead by Daylight
Can this genre be enjoyed with other players? Sure, and Dead by Daylight is a perfect example of this. Not only is it among the best horror games on PS5, but it’s also one of the most popular asymmetrical multiplayer titles on the market. What’s so good about it?
One of the most thrilling aspects of playing Dead by Daylight is the opportunity to truly create your own horror scenario. How so? Four players step into the shoes of (potential) survivors, while the fifth person becomes a vicious killer. The deadly game of hide and seek then ensues! If you want to feel the thrill, grab a bunch of friends to fully enjoy this title.
8. The Evil Within 2
Created by the father of the Resident Evil franchise, The Evil Within series doesn’t try to reinvent the genre. Instead, it takes you on a wild rollercoaster ride of iconic—and terrifying—nightmares. It’s gory, tense, and extremely enjoyable. Also, we think its among the best Bethesda games of all time!
The Evil Within 2 follows the gameplay formula of the original, but it builds upon already existing systems and adds brand-new elements, such as the semi-open world. It offers a perfect balance between scares and intense action, which results in high replayability. While it usually stays in the shadow of the more popular representatives of the genre, it’s a real modern classic, definitely deserving a place on the list of the best survival horror games on PS5.
7. Amnesia: The Bunker
The Amnesia series has been with us for a long time. The newest entry, Amnesia: The Bunker, offers yet another hair-raising experience. This time, the players find themselves alone in a deserted WW1 bunker. Sounds scary enough? There’s also something lurking in the darkness…
With a flashlight in one hand and the gun in the other, you’re tasked with exploring the titular structure. As expected from one of the top horror games, it may sometimes be hard to take another step, as terror lurks around every corner. It’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat for the few hours needed to finish The Bunker.
6. Alien: Isolation
Over the years, this classic cinematic franchise has received numerous videogame adaptations. Alien: Isolation may well be the best of them. It’s certainly the one that truly grasps the atmosphere of the first movie without resorting to cheap scares or pitting you against hundreds, if not thousands, of aliens.
This title offers a truly tense experience and restores Xenomorph’s reputation as one of the most frightening and deadly creatures ever put on a screen. It’s basically a long round of hide-and-seek between you, the alien, and other enemies on the vast space station. Can you find examples of scarier survival horror games on PS5?
5. Dead Space Remake
Back in 2008, the original terrorized thousands of players and left many of them craving more! The developers wanted to create one of the scariest titles ever made, and it’s safe to say that they succeeded. With the first game being so highly esteemed, Dead Space Remake had large shoes to fill. Since it’s on this list, you can probably guess that it didn’t disappoint.
It certainly is one of the most gory survival horror games on PlayStation 5. During the intense encounters with mutated creatures, Necromorphs, players need to change their usual combat strategy and aim for limbs instead of heads, so body parts constantly fly around the USG Ishimura spacecraft. The game can be genuinely scary—definitely not for the faint of heart!
4. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
This list wouldn’t be complete without one of the best PS VR2 games available on the market. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners offers an extremely immersive survival horror experience; after all, you’re looking at zombies from an entirely different perspective.
In this game, you’ll travel through a ruined world, trying to scavenge some supplies in order to survive. Players will also engage in fights against the living (and walking) dead roaming around destroyed cities. During the journey, you’ll encounter various factions and survivors, and you can choose how to deal with them. Brutal combat, moral dilemmas, and a desperate struggle for survival—a truly memorable VR experience.
3. Resident Evil 4 Remake
For many gamers, the original RE4 is the best survival horror game of all time. Creating a modernized version of such a classic without losing its “soul” must not have been easy, but CAPCOM managed to rise to the challenge. Resident Evil 4 Remake differs from 2005’s release (and we’re not talking only about the vastly improved visuals), but it definitely captures its spirit.
The result? A near-perfect game that mixes dynamic action with gruesome horror. And yes, many of Leon’s corny one-liners are still there! This remake is a perfect choice for new players, but it also has some neat surprises in store for the RE4 veterans, as developers rearranged selected locations and story beats. The replayability is off the charts.
2. The Last of Us Part I
While The Last of Us Part I likely wouldn’t find a place on the list of the scariest games of all time, it’s definitely a survival horror. A very good one, in fact. It’s often recognized as one of the greatest stories told in the medium, but it’s worth pointing out that it also has meaty gameplay.
Joel and Ellie journey through the violent, post-apocalyptic world, facing many setbacks and fighting for survival—both with gruesome Clickers and other people. The combat is very brutal and allows the player to use a wide variety of approaches, from open shootouts to stealth eliminations. It’s definitely one of the most interesting titles on the list of PlayStation 5 exclusives, especially for gamers who never played it on PS3 or PS4 (yeah, it’s the game’s third edition!).
1. Alan Wake 2
Surprise! Or is it? After all, Alan Wake 2 met with a fantastic reception upon its release—and for a good reason, too. It’s one of these exceedingly rare, exceptional singleplayer titles that offer a full package: great story, engaging gameplay, and beautiful visuals. You’re sure to find it among the best new releases on Sony’s current-gen console.
Is it the scariest game on this list? Definitely not, but it does have a tense atmosphere, plenty of spine-chilling moments, and some surprising jump scares. It’s a very surreal experience—reality blends with fiction, and Alan’s world spirals endlessly into an insane mess of horrific scenes. The game is so gripping that it might be hard to put the controller down.
