The developers of MW2 were heavily criticized for not addressing community feedback throughout the game’s lifespan. It seems Sledgehammer Games is keen for that to be a thing of the past with MW3.
MW3’s incoming changes — confirmed by Sledgehammer Games
Sledgehammer Games took part in an AMA session on the Modern Warfare 3 subreddit and answered many questions about the future of MW3. The most requested topic for Sledgehammer to address was skill-based matchmaking (SBMM). It seems like the session wasn’t really an “AMA” as Sledgehammer clumsily avoided that elephant in the room.
Still, several updates and changes are confirmed to be on the way, and there’s some fantastic stuff to look forward to, including:
- New War Mode Maps
- Gun Game Mode
- Demolition Mode
- Shipment from MW2 is coming to MW3
- Hardcore Modes will have a Final Killcam
- Most future MW3 maps will be new instead of ones from the previous CoD games
- Groot Skin is being altered to make it more visible
We also have a few incoming balance changes. Although Sledgehammer Games was light on specifics, some of these changes address overpowered weapons for Hardcore modes specifically:
- SMG Buffs
- Grenade Launcher Nerf
- Frag Grenade Nerf
- Scatter Mine Nerf
I’m not a Hardcore player, so I can’t comment on the state of play in those modes, but it’s nice to see Sledgehammer Games addressing player concerns. The Groot skin has been wreaking havoc in MW3 as it’s hard to see, so any changes there are welcome.
I’m thrilled to see the return of Gun Game, and the War Mode is way more fun than it has any right to be, so the more maps, the better.
Did Sledgehammer Games address Covert Sneakers?
Sledgehammer Games addressed several things it isn’t working on, including Covert Sneakers. Some players are concerned that the Covert Sneakers are too powerful, but the devs seem happy with how they are for now. Sledgehammer also confirmed it isn’t working on the following:
- Theater Mode
- Headquarters Mode
- 3rd Person Modes
- 1v1 Mode
Although I’m a fan of Headquarters, it’s not the most popular Call of Duty mode, so I’m not surprised it’s not coming back in MW3.
Why wasn’t SBMM mentioned in the MW3 AMA?
It’s a shame that SBMM was completely ignored in the AMA, as it’s such a contentious topic. There are two sides to this coin; unfortunately, you can’t expect mature conversations on social media about it. Some players see strict SBMM as a good thing as it protects low-skill players. Others hate it as they feel they can’t keep up with their lobbies unless they sweat and use meta weapons, which makes gameplay stale.
Regardless of where the community or Sledgehammer Games stand on the issue, it was abundantly clear the issue wasn’t up for discussion. Maybe that stance will change in the future, but I think it’s above the pay grade of anyone answering questions on Reddit.
