Prepare your finest pirate cutlass, because we have a Curse of the Sea Rats release date. The upcoming “Ratoidvania” (surely Ratroidvania, no?) is launching on April 6th and offers a classic Metroidvania-style adventure packed with combat, exploration, and, well, sea rats.
Curse of the Sea Rats is set in the 18th century and follows four heroes cursed by pirate witch Flora Burn. Transformed into rats, they must battle through Burn’s crew in order to regain their bodies and discover the secrets of the Irish coast. Of course, Burn’s captains won’t go down without a fight. Here’s a new Curse of the Sea Rats trailer that introduces you to those very same salty sea critters.
Some of the bosses you’ll be facing off against include Krabawaki and King Clapper, two crabs with massive claws and a love for treasure. You’ll also do battle with Freddy Eightfingers, a rat-spider hybrid who wields twin daggers, and Rama Cinnamon, a sharp-tongued rat, along with her pet toucan Banana. Rounding off the introductory salvo of bosses are Fatso and Fatsie, twin captains with a love for fighting.
It’s not just daring boss fights against pirate legends, though. Curse of the Sea Rats also has four distinct heroes to play as, each of whom comes with their own skill tree. The game supports co-op, so you can play alongside up to three friends as you explore a huge world full of secrets to find and hand-drawn art to see. If you like your historical fiction with a liberal helping of fantasy, then Curse of the Sea Rats looks like it’ll be the perfect pirate treasure to hunt down.
Curse of the Sea Rats launches for PC via Steam on April 6th. The game will also be available on PlayStation consoles, Xbox platforms, and Nintendo Switch. If you prefer a physical edition, you can pre-order Switch and PlayStation copies of the game via publisher PQube’s official website. Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One physical retail copies are simply listed as “coming soon”, so you’ll have to wait a little while for those.
