While the latest AC game hasn’t exactly taken Steam by storm, its reviews are quite positive.
Today marks the release of Shadows, the newest installment in the Assassin’s Creed series. Early player reviews are generally positive, with 82% of Steam users rating the game favorably.
However, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows player count on Steam has been somewhat underwhelming, though it still surpasses Valhalla and Mirage. There are likely several factors contributing to this, and in this article, we’ll explore them.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows player count isn’t too impressive so far. But why is it so low?
Despite its favorable reviews, the peak Assassin’s Creed Shadows player count is currently 32,924 (though it may be higher by the time you read this, as it’s constantly changing), making it the third most popular AC game on Steam, behind Odyssey and Origins.
However, it still surpasses the all-time peaks of Mirage and Valhalla. That said, this isn’t particularly impressive, considering those two games had delayed Steam releases due to time exclusivity with Epic Games.
Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to judge the success of the latest installment on PC based solely on its popularity on Valve’s platform. Many players might be playing it on Epic or through Ubisoft+ Premium.
In fact, subscribing to Ubisoft’s gaming service is the cheapest way to access the game, which could be affecting its performance on other platforms. After all, many may choose this option over purchasing their own copy due to its affordability.
Additionally, to play the game on Steam, players need to buy it there, as most discounts apply only to the version redeemable on Ubisoft Connect. The lack of Assassin’s Creed Shadows Steam key discounts could also explain the lower concurrent player peak.

Can I buy a cheaper Assassin’s Creed Shadows Steam key?
As mentioned, there’s no way to get a cheaper Assassin’s Creed Shadows Steam key. You can only purchase it directly through Valve’s platform. As shown in the widget below, the available deals are all for the Ubisoft Connect version of the game.
