It’s certainly the end of an era. Codemasters has paused development plans for future rally titles.
Unfortunately, we have some disappointing news for off-road racing fans. Codemasters has announced that it is ending its work on WRC, with the recently released Hard Chargers Content Pack marking the final expansion for EA SPORTS WRC.
No more rally games from Codemasters
When EA Sports WRC launched in fall 2023, many rally fans saw it as the beginning of a promising new series from Codemasters. However, as it turns out, there won’t be any further entries. In fact, the studio has confirmed that, for now, all of its rally game development is on hold.
It’s a surprising shift for a developer with such a rich legacy in the genre, having worked on iconic titles like Colin McRae Rally and the DiRT series, among others. Currently, Codemasters continues to focus on its Formula 1 franchise, which sees new installments released annually.
Additionally, the FIA stated on X (formerly Twitter) that WRC is heading towards “an ambitious new direction,” with more details on upcoming officially licensed titles expected soon. As of now, it remains unclear which studio will take over the license.
