Another multiplayer FPS bites the dust. A once-celebrated arena shooter is shutting down its servers to make way for its sequel, and not everyone’s happy.
Sad news has arrived from developer 1047 Games: the original Splitgate will be shutting down its servers in August. Known for its unique blend of fast-paced arena gunplay and tactical portal movement, Splitgate carved out a loyal fanbase among free FPS game fans. At its prime, the game pulled in over 60,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. Its departure is a major loss for the genre.
Why is Splitgate shutting down?
The short answer: to cut costs and redirect resources toward Splitgate 2, the sequel that launched earlier this year to a rocky start. If that sounds blunt, it’s essentially what co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian said in a recent statement on X.
In a nutshell, they admitted they launched Splitgate 2 too early, which led to mixed reviews on Steam and heated discussions. The game struggled to capture what made the original special, leading to backlash from longtime fans. Complaints ranged from technical issues and convoluted monetization to a lack of the portal-centric gameplay that once defined the series. Addressing such an array of problems requires desperate measures.

In response, Splitgate 2 is going back into beta. The team plans to overhaul progression systems, reintroduce more portal-focused maps, simplify monetization, and bring back classic game modes. Simply put, they’re rebuilding the experience to better reflect what players loved in the first place.
However, that rework comes with tough decisions. To retain as many developers as possible, 1047 Games will shut down the original Splitgate servers and reduce staff. Online multiplayer titles ain’t cheap to maintain, after all.
When will Splitgate servers go offline?
While an exact shutdown date hasn’t been confirmed, the team says servers will go down “in a month.” That puts the likely shutdown around August 22–23, 2025. 1047 is also exploring the possibility of supporting peer-to-peer or offline modes for Splitgate in the future, but nothing is guaranteed. For now, you can enjoy the original while it’s still available.
