Embracer Group is selling off the developer of the upcoming Borderlands game.
The surprising announcement comes directly from the creators behind the popular looter shooter franchise. According to the post on their official X page, Gearbox is acquired by Take-Two, a video game holding company that owns two powerhouse publishers, Rockstar Games and 2K. However, there are other good news we’ve learned today.
Borderlands 4 is on its way
Owners may change, but the current project’s state is the key topic of interest for regular players. Luckily, the highly-anticipated Borderlands 4 is in active development as Gearbox joins forces with 2K. The IP rights for the Borderlands series, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem are obtained by T2. Randy Pitchford will also keep his position as the company’s CEO.

This news comes as a relief for gamers concerned about the fate of the upcoming installment and other projects its developers have been working on. Back in 2021, Embracer Group merged with The Gearbox Entertainment, sealing the $1.3 billion deal. A Swedish holding company that used to buy out other game developers but faced financial troubles. And now, Gearbox is being sold to T2, with the transaction valued at $460 million. The deal is expected to be closed in Q1 2025.
