Know your Colombia from your Columbia? Well, that’s what the new free GeoGuessr Steam Edition is ready to put to the test, after arriving on Valve’s storefront today.
The game’s been playable for a long time now on mobile devices and browsers, and went viral a few years back thanks to streamers — growing so large that it now even holds its own world championships. But this is the first time it’s been available to download on Steam.

What is GeoGuessr?
GeoGuessr is a geography game that drops you into random street view locations from around the world, challenging you to guess your exact position on a map.
The classic mode consists of five rounds, each showing a different location, where you’ll explore the surroundings by moving and looking around to gather clues such as road signs, vegetation, and architecture.
After examining the scene, you’ll then place a guess on the map, earning up to 5,000 points per round based on how close your guess is to the actual location, with a perfect game scoring 25,000 points.
There are various other game modes, including moving games where you’ll need to navigate the area; no-move modes where guesses must be made from a single view; and competitive duels.
Scoring always depends on the distance between the guess and the true location, with closer guesses earning exponentially higher points.

The free version provides unlimited access to Amateur Division and unranked Team Duels, but to unlock full Solo Duels, you’ll need to buy a GeoGuessr Steam Pass in-game or subscribe to an Elite Yearly sub.
If you already have an Elite Yearly membership for the browser version, you’ll get full access to the Steam edition. A GeoGuessr Steam Pass doesn’t grant you access to the browser-based game. However, crossplay is enabled.
