The backlash didn’t escape the company’s attention.
A couple of days ago, it was revealed that playing Helldivers 2 on PC will require linking one’s Steam and PSN accounts, resulting in one hell of a backlash. As stated in PlayStation’s new tweet, the decision has been overruled; the change was originally intended to happen today, but the linking won’t be compulsory after all.
Playing Helldivers 2 on PC won’t require linking your Steam and PSN accounts
Following the initial announcement, hell broke loose over the weekend, as players bombarded the game with negative reviews on Steam (and they’re still “Mostly Negative” today). Despite the backlash, Sony seemed bent on following through with this decision, as Helldivers 2 was pulled in over 170 countries—regions with no PSN access—just yesterday.
The issue got so serious that Steam allowed its users to refund Helldivers 2, even if they played for more than 2 hours. Perhaps this was what finally made Sony rethink its decision; today, a post on PlayStation’s Twitter account revealed that the dreaded change “won’t be moving forward.”
Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.
We’re still…

It appears that the community’s “rebellion” wasn’t for naught, as the company has recognized the voices of gamers. Only time will reveal the impact of this whole fiasco on the game’s popularity.
