Overall, the event didn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of new PS5 games.
We got a slew of news at January’s State of Play 2024, including additional news on games we knew were in development, as well as some surprise reveals and even a couple of PSVR2 titles thrown in for good measure. Hideo Kojima fans and Silent Hill enthusiasts, in particular, will have come away from the stream feeling pretty good about things. But what exactly did Sony cover in their opening show of the year? Let’s take a look.
The first PS State of Play 2024 games to get hyped for
If you didn’t have time to watch the entire 40-minute-long stream of the first PlayStation State of Play in 2024, you can simply skim through our summary. It was a night to remember for the owners of Sony’s current-gen consoles, but PC players also received some good news. Without further ado, let’s get to business!
Helldivers 2
The show opened with a new trailer for Helldivers 2, a third-person squad-based shooter where you take down giant alien creatures using massive guns or while piloting even bigger mechs. The game looks like loads of fun and comes to PS5 on February 8th.
Stellar Blade
Originally announced in 2019, Stellar Blade is the latest project from South Korean developers Shift Up, set in a post-apocalyptic world where an alien threat has destroyed much of Earth and forced most humans off-planet. You’ll play as Eve — or Angel, as she’s known to character in-game — and it’s your job to hunt down and eliminate these aliens, traveling to different areas such as the Wasteland, Great Desert and an underground encampment where remaining humans have retreated to try and rebuild following the alien assault. You’ll be able to take on missions from request boards, visit supply stations to purchase consumables, pick up new skills and upgrade equipment, all while encountering a cast of weird and wonderful character and dangerous foes. ‘Reclaim Earth for Humankind” on PS5, coming April 26th.

Sonic X Shadow Generations
Sonic X Shadow Generations was a brand-new reveal at this State of Play. We didn’t get to see an awful lot here, but what we did see focused on Shadow, heavily suggesting we’ll get to play as them in a new story mode, as well as taking on 2D and 3D levels as both classic and modern Sonic. Announced for a Fall 2024 release, Sonic X Shadow Generations will be coming to both PS4 and PS5.

Zenless Zone Zero
This is a brand-new, urban-fantasy action RPG from Hoyoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. As you might expect, the game looked brilliantly fun and packed with fast-pace combat including melee attacks and lasers. This stylish MMO doesn’t have a launch date as yet, but it was announced as being in development for PS5 and will be free to play once released.
Foamstars
We’ve known about Foamstars for a while, but today’s State of Play revealed some new gameplay footage alongside a range of characters and one of the funkiest soundtracks you’re likely to hear all year. We also go the very welcome news it will be released on February 6th on PlayStation Plus, meaning anyone with a PS+ subscription (regardless of tier) will be able to access and enjoy the foam-filled multiplayer mayhem from day one.
Dave the Diver
One of last year’s breakout ‘indie’ successes, Dave the Dave was announced as coming to PS5 in April. Already available on PC and Switch, the PlayStation version will include haptic feedback for the DualSense controller for moments in the game such as when fish are nibbling at your line. Alongside this release announcement, we also got news that a Godzilla crossover DLC will be available to download for free in May.
V Rising
We got a short glimpse of Stunlock Studios’ upcoming isometric survival-RPG title, V Rising. You’ll play as a vampire, awoken after centuries, into a dark gothic world that has forgotten to fear your kind. Play solo or in co-op, roaming across an open world of six distinct regions filled with vicious beasts, bandits and monsters, taking on 50 bosses and drinking their blood to unlock new skills and journey towards reclaiming your position as the ruler of the night. No hard date has been revealed just yet, only that we should expect V Rising this year.

Silent Hill: The Short Message
Everyone loves a shadow drop, and that’s what we got in the form of Silent Hill: The Short Message. The game’s a first-person survival horror, with its story following the protagonist Maya who falls into a dark and creepy world, searching for something unknown, all while being stalked and haunted by an evil within. You can find out more for yourself, as it’s available for free right now!

Silent Hill 2
And if that didn’t make Silent Hill fans happy, the next reveal was a first look at gameplay from the Silent Hill 2 remake currently in development over at Bloober Team. As with the Resident Evil remakes of recent years, Silent Hill 2 looks like a huge upgrade from its original counterpart, including what Konami describe as “improved and modernized” combat, while staying true to what made it a heart-pounding classic in the first place. No release date, unfortunately, just a confirmation that it’s ‘Now In Development.’

Judas
We then got another look at Judas, the first game from Ken Levine’s (of BioShock fame) new studio, Ghost Story Games. Originally previewed at The Game Awards 2022 with a cinematic trailer, Judas is a first-person shooter set on a dystopian city floating in space where all its inhabitants are watched around the clock by machines. You’ll get to play as Judas, who’s leading the fight back against them — and it looks like she’s armed with some cool powers to do just that. Again, we only received a ‘Now In Development’ at the end of this State of Play trailer.

Metro Awakening
The first of two PlayStation VR2 titles to be revealed, Metro Awakening VR is a horror game set in the Metro universe and said to be highly inspired by the Dmitry Glukhovsky book Metro 2033. You’ll play as Serdar, a doctor looking for his wife who’s missing in the Metro tunnels. Definitely not one for the faint of heart, this immersive VR experience looks to be packed with suspense and jump scares around every corner, with disgusting creatures lurking in the Metro’s shadows. Slated to be coming in 2024.

Legendary Tales
Legendary Tales was the second, and final, PlayStation VR2 games to be revealed, and looks set to be one for fantasy fans of the Skyrim persuasion. We got to see our player character dual-wielding swords, battling skeletons, crafting and using magic against a range of other monsters. Level up your character using the game’s skill tree, combining traits and skills to create the dark-fantasy RPG character of your choosing. There’s not long to wait at all, as Legendary Tales launches on PSVR2 on February 8th.
Dragon’s Dogma II
Next up, we got another look at Dragon’s Dogma II, with this trailer revealing a brand new Warfarer vocation, the vocation maisters and a mysterious dragonsplague. Capcom desribe the Warfarer vocation as being the ultimate one players can choose, thanks to its ability to “utilize the strengths of each vocation as the situation demands”. As for the dragonsplague, we know that can infect Pawns and spread among them as they travel between worlds. Initially these Pawns will show improved stats — which players might see as a boost on their journey — but, eventually, the Pawns will suffer a “calamitous” fate. Dragon’s Dogma II will be coming out on March 22nd.
Rise of Ronin
One of this year’s most-anticipated games was up next, with Team Ninja showing off extended gameplay and details for Rise of Ronin, a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Set in Japan’s 19th-century Bakumatsu period, we got to see our player riding horseback, climbing onto rooftops and gliding through the skies of a fully explorable Yokohama using something called an Avicula. We also got to see dynamic kill scenes, a range of traditional and experimental weapons (including a kind of period flamethrower) and discovered that the choices you make strongly influence how the game plays out. You wait for one brilliant RPG to come out and then two come along at once — Rise of Ronin will also release on March 22nd.
Until Dawn Remake
One of Sony’s newer studios, Ballistic Moon, were up next, confirming the rumours behind an Until Dawn Remake. And it looks terrifyingly gorgeous. The original 2014 horror smash sees a group of teens spending a night in a secluded mountain lodge. And things go as badly as you might guess, with the friends finding out to their horror that they’re being hunted by a deranged individual. As the player, your choice decide the group’s fate in real time. The Until Dawn remake is confirmed for 2024.

Death Stranding 2 On The Beach
The final game — sort of — came in the form of the sequel to everyone’s favorite deliver ‘em up, Death Stranding. We got confirmation of a name — Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. And we got a meaty trailer that, in true Hideo Kojima fashion, managed to cover lots and not much at all. It’s almost impossible to describe what’s going on in this trailer but if you’re a fan of Kojima’s, there’s a very good chance you’ll be all over this. Seriously, just check the video out below. It’s bonkers. And you’ll have a whole year to work it out too, as Death Stranding 2 is due for release in 2025.

Another Hideo Kojima game
We got a double dose of Kojima-san during this PlayStation State of Play, with the game director also announcing that he’s planning on developing an action-espionage game alongside PlayStation. However, he did say that work on this title wouldn’t begin “in earnest” until Death Stranding 2 was complete. We only have a name for this project so far: ‘PHYSINT’.
One More Announcement
As a final reveal, Sony announced fans only have a few days to wait until the next PlayStation State of Play. Square Enix will be revealing gameplay and “exciting news you won’t want to miss” on February 6th (next Tuesday, at time of writing) as part of a special presentation focusing of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
