- Mochi-O is a new upcoming release from Kodansha Creators’ Lab
- It sees you wielding a gun-happy hamster to fight off evil robots
- Strengthen your bond, upgrade your hamster and save the world
I think it’s a bit of a cliche at this point to refer to stuff coming out of Japan as weird. But for the mega manga publisher’s new indie games label, Kodansha Creators’ Lab’s upcoming release Mochi-O,may force me to break out that word, because there’s definitely something untoward (in a good way) about what this upcoming indie release offers
What’s Mochi-O all about? Well, this is a rail shooter where you blast enemy robots to shreds in an attempt to defend the world from destruction. Pretty standard, except for the part where the weapon you wield is in-fact an adorable hamster that’s doing all the blasting, complete with heavy armaments ranging from rifles to rocket launchers!
Yes, Mochi-O is a rail shooter that also combines virtual pet elements, as you raise the titular Mochi-O, unlocking new weapons to equip them with and feed them seeds to help strengthen them and increase your trust status. There’s even roguelike elements springled in there to offer random upgrades as you progress through each battle!
Creative
Coming specifically from solo creator Zxima, Mochi-O has that rough-around-the-edges sort of charm that you would expect from an indie release. Kodansha Creators’ Lab is, as you might have guessed, also an arm of the famous manga publisher, and it’s very heartening to see indie devs like Zxima get more visibility as a result of working with them.
With its quirky tone and retro rail shooter mechanics, I don’t blame you for being curious about Mochi-O. So keep an eye out for it, as Mochi-O is slated to land on iOS and Android sometime this year!
Speaking of retro reinventions, maybe you’ve heard that Supercell is set to unveil a new release? Well, if you’re curious how Mo.Co reinvents a classic monster-hunting genre, be sure to check in on our preview!
