- Steel Paws, the newest Netflix Games release made in collaboration with Yu Suzuki, is out now
- Ascend to the top of a mysterious tower helped by your robotic companions
- Upgrade them and use a variety of special moves to take on mechanical enemies
Netflix Games has just expanded its catalogue with a brand-new, highly-anticipated release as their newest full-fledged free-to-play – with a Netflix subscription, of course – launch Steel Paws arrives today! But what does this platforming brawler have to offer? And can it stand up to scrutiny? Well, let’s dig in and find out.
Available on iOS and Android via Netflix’s gaming catalogue, Steel Paws sees you step into the shoes of a cybernetic explorer ascending a mysterious tower. Aided by your mechanical buddies, you’ll customise them and utilise your allies’ abilities to help battle your way through hordes of malicious robots that stand between you and the top of the tower.
Yu Suzuki, who many of you will know for his work on the iconic Shenmue series, is attached to Steel Paws. And it’s not hard to see a little bit of his influence with the focus on brawling, special moves and dense sub-systems that we can see in the trailer.
Take paws
At the same time, while Suzuki is a fabled director, he’s also had his flaws. And while Steel Paws does look impressive in terms of gameplay, there’s the occasional moment that makes me pause, like the oddly unexpressive main character and somewhat stiff animations for example.
But equally, I’m definitely rooting for Steel Paws to be good as it’d be nice for Netflix to get a winner in the form of a full-fledged 3D brawler. If something like this can succeed, after all, hopefully, we won’t see an exceptional service reduced to just a place for Too Hot to Handle spinoffs or other mediocre tie-ins to popular shows.
