If you’ve been checking in on us for a while, you may know that our parent company runs an event known as Pocket Gamer Connects. And one of the things that we run is called the Big Indie Pitch, where innovative new indie releases are showcased to a panel of judges. Today, we’re going to look at one of the top runners-up that caught our eye, in the form of math-battling roguelike Talystro!
At a glance, it’s hard to distinguish Talystro from other deckbuilding roguelikes (as the genre is certainly incredibly popular at the moment) but if you look a bit longer you can see why it stood out. Mixing the use of cards and dice, you’ll play the math mouse who battles monsters in the form of numbers in your quest to depose the evil Necrodicer.
How does it work? Well, essentially you combine the use of dice and cards. You then make up a target number in order to eliminate certain monsters based on the number they embody! Just be careful because you only have a limited number of dice to use per turn.

Talystro has that odd mix of rubber hose-style animation and a fantasy aesthetic that makes it resemble some of those math-focused educational games you might play as a kid. And while it’s never going to demand anything more than some basic entry-level mathematics the gameplay is still enthralling and easy to grasp from a simple look alone.
Talystro is set to release in March, and I reckon this simple-to-understand but hard-to-master format (which so many deckbuilders get wrong) will be what really grabs people with this release!
