- Toria is the upcoming next-gen mobile RPG from Pocket Play Studios
- Explore the titular world as a mercenary leader seeking fame and fortune
- Engage in 3D turn-based battles, explore 2D side-scrolling cities and even hunt animals in first person
The mobile RPG genre is one which is, I think it’s fair to say, incredibly vibrant. So with that amount of competition, you have to do a lot to make your release stand out. And with Pocket Play Studios, they have big ambitions for their upcoming release Toria, and its ‘next-gen’ quality.
Story-wise, Toria is as typical a fantasy adventure as you can get. You play a mercenary leader taking your party across the world of Toria, searching for wealth, glory and adventure. A fully animated navigable map offers random events and other twists and turns to keep you constantly on your toes.
In terms of concept, Toria is pretty straightforward, mixing in an overworld you explore and gradually uncover, with 2D side-scrolling first-personish exploration of towns and locations, and finally a 3D turn-based battling system. In terms of mechanics, this is a pretty jam-packed sounding release, although nothing truly ‘next-gen’ yet.
Toria, Toria, Toria
In terms of standout mechanics, I don’t think there’s any one thing that makes Toria unusual. But in terms of the overall package, this is certainly a fascinating mix of concepts that we’ve seen only briefly touched on in the mobile RPG genre. I’m particularly intrigued by the first-person sections, including a hunting minigame where you wield a longbow to take out hidden prey.
Even the early footage we can see in preview trailers looks well-rounded and relatively close to completion already. It presents a pretty interesting art style and 3D turn-based battling. All of which, even if not enough to push forward the genre, looks very compelling for a release from a small studio such as Pocket Play!
