- VolleyBall King, out now on iOS and Android, is a flashy take on the classic sport
- Pick from a variety of distinct animesque characters and spike the ball like it’s Haikyuu
- Different arenas and minigames offer plenty of content to make your way through
Now isn’t this a turn-up? Right after I finish writing about the newly-released Pocket Hockey Stars, another story comes across my desk featuring arcade sporting action. But this time we’re getting off the ice and onto the court, as VolleyBall King springs into action on iOS and Android, out now!
Yes, volleyball has an oddly fine pedigree when it comes to excitement. Be it modern icons like Haikyuu or classics such as Attack No. 1, volleyball is almost on par with martial arts and sword and sorcery in terms of being anime and manga favourites. And it’s this flashy, almost superhuman take on the sport VolleyBall King seeks to emulate.
Using an intriguing control scheme showcased in the trailer, VolleyBall King sees you moving quickly left and right, diving, jumping and spiking the ball with flashy effect-filled moves. Offering a variety of players and arenas to pick from, while the QWOP-like animation may be a bit offputting, VolleyBall King hardly lacks in terms of enthusiasm.
Spiked
Yes, VolleyBall King undeniably owes a lot to the sports anime and manga from which it clearly draws influence. But at the same time when it comes to lightweight, arcade takes on this sport I’m hard-pressed to think of any recent examples aside from it. So even if you find all this flashy superhuman leaping and spiking to be a bit gauche, it’s well worth checking out for the fun-filled take on volleyball alone.
But if you really are insistent on looking outside of VolleyBall King for more options, why not check out our list of the best sports games for iOS and Android to see what’s on offer?
