Nintendo’s recent effort to put Miis on the back burner has struck again, as Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 on the Switch has completely removed Mii save icons.
For nearly as long as Nintendo has been around, Mario has been the company’s one and only mascot. During Nintendo’s rise to casual stardom in the Wii era, that nearly changed, as Miis became all the rage and started appearing in pretty much every Nintendo game out there, whether there was a good reason for it or not.
That certainly isn’t the case anymore. Although Miis do still exist on the Switch and have made occasional appearances in games, they are far from the icons that they used to be. If you want an example of how far Miis have fallen in the past decade, look no further than the Switch ports of Super Mario Galaxy 1+2.
Nintendo Has Killed Mii Save Icons In Super Mario Galaxy On Switch
Great, Now I Have To Choose Luigi’s Face As My Save
Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 launched at the height of Mii popularity, so it didn’t come as a surprise that Nintendo included a cute option to have your Mii’s head as a save icon in both games. It didn’t really have a purpose beyond being a fun choice, but it’s something that a lot of Galaxy fans have fond memories of.
Well, that’s exactly how they’re going to remain – memories. For some strange reason, Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 on the Switch has completely removed Mii save icons, which was pointed out by Twitter user BettisMarquiss. Now all that remains are a handful of Galaxy characters such as Mario, Peach, and Rosalina.
At least Miis are going to get their time in the spotlight in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream…
Although it is a small detail in the grand scheme of things, it’s a bit of a shame that Nintendo decided to cut Mii save icons from the Switch remasters. It’s not a major surprise considering Miis are barely a thing on the Switch 2, but they do exist and haven’t changed considerably, so it surely wouldn’t be too much work to have them included for save icons.
