11 bit studios has announced the release date for the first major paid Frostpunk 2 DLC expansion; it’s called Fractured Utopias, and it’s bringing new events, new skill trees, and more in December.
As revealed in a Steam news post, Fractured Utopias will arrive on December 8th, and as the name suggests, it’s built around the game’s Utopia Builder sandbox mode, introducing a whole host of new content to the creative side of Frostpunk 2.
You can look forward to eight brand new factions with their own skill trees, including the technologically-minded Technocrats and the militaristic Legionnaires, among many others. Each faction’s skill tree grants unique buildings and abilities, and you’ll progress through them by earning your faction’s favor.
As well as these new factions, two new narrative Tales will be added, alongside a new map that’s “designed on their basis”. The first, Plague, will bring a mysterious new disease to your city, which you’ll have to act fast to cure.
The second new Tale is Doomsayers, which introduces a faction spreading despair and misery among your populace (and given their name, I bet you’ll never guess how they’re doing it). You’ll need to confront them and their influence if you want your city to survive.
Fractured Utopias represents the first of three planned paid DLC expansions for Frostpunk 2, as outlined in the game’s first roadmap back in November last year. We’re not sure when the other two will launch yet.
News of the game’s first paid DLC pack follows hot on the heels of its launch on current-gen consoles in September, as well as a modding competition that saw a number of enterprising Frostpunk 2 modders rewarded for their efforts with cash prizes.
Frostpunk 2 is available to buy right now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it’s also part of the Game Pass lineup. The Fractured Utopias DLC launches across all platforms on December 8th, and while you wait, you can read our very own Andrew Stretch’s review of the base game right here.
