Developer and publisher Square Enix has announced that its Octopath Traveler series of HD-2D JRPGs has hit a big sales milestone since the first game launched back in 2018.
As revealed by the official X account of what Square Enix refers to as the “HD-2D series”, sales of the Octopath Traveler franchise, which now consists of three games (technically four if one counts the mobile-only Champions of the Continent), have reached six million.
If you need a refresher, the first game was released exclusively for Nintendo Switch in 2018, but it was subsequently ported to a number of other systems. Sequel Octopath Traveler II, which was released in 2023, hit Switch, PlayStation, and PC straight away, with an Xbox port following in 2024.
If you’re unfamiliar with Octopath Traveler, it’s a series of JRPGs using Square Enix’s trademark HD-2D style, and the first two games in the series revolve around eight individual characters, each of whom has their own story.
The first Octopath Traveler game essentially tells each of the stories separately; there are opportunities for party members to speak to one another, but essentially, you’re playing eight different narratives, Live a Live-style.
For the sequel, Square Enix shook up the formula a little, allowing more conversation between party members and introducing a more interconnected narrative, but in essence, Octopath Traveler II still espouses the more disparate approach favored by its predecessor.
The recently-released Octopath Traveler 0 is a different kettle of fish, though; it’s an attempt to tell a more unified story with a slightly more conventional structure, although our reviewer Robert didn’t exactly feel that it succeeded in this goal.
The HD-2D series doesn’t stop with Octopath Traveler, of course; it also encompasses Square Enix’s recent and rather successful Dragon Quest remakes, as well as the upcoming (and rather oddly-named) action RPG The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.
With numbers like this, it’s safe to say there will be another Octopath Traveler game along before you know it. For now, though, you’ll have to content yourself with Octopath Traveler 0, which is available now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S, and both Switch 2 and Switch.
