11 Bit Studios appear to be working on a first-person survival ‘Frostpunk’ spin-off

The Frostpunk franchise has proven to be one of 11 Bit Studios’ most successful IPs, with the duology of city-building survival titles amassing both critical and commercial success in the 8 years since the first game’s release. While a full blown remake of the original 2018 title is currently in development, it appears as though 11 Bit Studios are also looking to expand the franchise beyond its current genre – with new job listings suggesting that a first-person survival crafter based in the Frostpunk universe is currently in the works.

As reported by the publication CheatHappens, 11 Bit Studios recently published a job listing for a Level Designer whose responsibilities include:

  • Designing and iterating open-world locations
  • Creating natural environments and different biomes that support exploration, clear navigation and first-person traversal
  • Designing gameplay spaces around survival mechanics, verticality, combat and environmental challenges

Another job listing, this time for an ‘Expert Gameplay Programmer’ asks that applicants have “experience working on multiplayer and/or co-op games” as well as “2 years of professional experience with Unreal Engine.”

This ties into previous investor reports by 11 Bit Studios, where-in they revealed that they are working on “a new game set in the Frostpunk universe” currently known as Project 13 (which is separate from their previously-announced Frostpunk 1886).

While not outwardly stated, it is safe to assume that these new job listings pertain to the aforementioned Project 13; a project which is seemingly a first-person survival crafter set in the Frostpunk universe.

Though it would represent quite a departure from the past two games, the world of Frostpunk features many of the elements which one would want from a survival crafter, including a strong sense of world-building, oppressive environments and multiple factions. It will be interesting to see how exactly they approach such a project.
