A Complete Guide To The Federation Fleet MTG Commander Deck

Next up in the Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Commander reveals is the Federation Fleet deck. This Jeskai deck focuses on drawing cards, slapping +1/+1 counters on your creatures, and charging up your devastating Spacecrafts. Its primary Commander also interacts with historic permanents, something that isn’t too common in the format, but it’s a nice little side quest that gives you a good idea of what cards to expect in the deck.

While it doesn’t look like the most powerful deck out of the box, it has serious upgrade potential, as any good Commander precon should. That said, it won’t crack the top ten of our 2026 Commander precon rankings as it stands.

Commander Overview

Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary MTG Star Trek card.

The face commander for the Federation Fleet precon is Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary. He’s a four-mana (1U, 1R, 1W, 1C) 2/4 creature who lets you draw a card any time a historic permanent you control with mana value three or greater enters.

Historic permanents are artifacts, legendaries, or sagas.

He also has the Seek Out ability, which states that whenever you draw your second card of each turn, put a +1/+1 counter on one other target creature and two charge counters on up to one Spacecraft.

The backup commander for this deck is Captain Janeway, Endgame, another four-mana creature with an identical cost structure; it enters as a 3/3 and, whenever one or more Officers you control deal combat damage to a player, you draw a card and create a 1/1 red Officer creature token.

You can also pay two colorless mana and tap an untapped creature you control to make Captain Janeway unblockable. This Commander is much less loaded, and arguably more straightforward, than Picard, but both do a job in this Jeskai deck and have synergies that can win you matches.

Strategy

This deck is all about drawing card after card after card until you get your biggest threats in your hand, then onto the battlefield. In this case, it’s your Spacecrafts, which, once stationed, are deadly flying creatures. You’ll need to protect them, though, and the deck has a few counterspells to help.

One of the biggest threats is the U.S.S. Prometheus, Prototype, a five-mana Spacecraft that, once fully stationed, deals damage to every opponent equal to its power whenever it deals combat damage to a player. It enters as a 6/6.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of enchantments or non-mana-generating artifacts, this deck is pretty one-dimensional, at least when compared to the We Are The Borg deck, which seemed to do much more with its artifact creature identity.

On paper, this seems like a fun deck to play with, but we’ll be keen to see the upgrade jobs that people suggest, because there is a really good deck in here somewhere; it just needs a few changes to give it some extra personality.
