It took exactly 30 years years for Dragon Ball to finally introduce Gine, the mother of Goku, so it’s no surprise it’s taken nearly four decades for the series to so much as hint at the identity of Vegeta’s mom. The Queen of All Saiyans, Vegeta’s mother is a woman shrouded in mystery. All we know about her is that she is a woman who existed, and that she was seemingly out of the picture by the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Interestingly, neither Vegeta nor Tarble ever mention Queen Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z. Vegeta will reference his father on occasion, but never his mother. That hasn’t stopped Toyotarou from drawing Vegeta’s mother in his latest release for Dragon Ball Super, however. Queen Vegeta is obscured by King Vegeta’s cape, but there are enough details present to give Dragon Ball fans an idea of who Vegeta’s mother was. More importantly, the introduction of Queen Vegeta could signal a Vegeta-centric Saga once the Dragon Ball Super manga comes back.
Vegeta’s Mother Must Have Been a Powerful Saiyan
Saiyan culture is designed around the idea of the whole race following the strongest warrior as their ruler. That’s why King Vegeta gets scared when Broly is born with such a high Power Level in Dragon Ball Super: Broly – he could realistically usurp the Vegeta family someday and there’d be nothing the King could do. It stands to reason that a King who prizes power this much would marry someone just as powerful as himself. King Vegeta takes immense pride in baby Vegeta’s Power Level, so his wife may very well have been the strongest female Saiyan on Planet Vegeta.
The fact she’s dressed in similar royal attire to King Vegeta, and confidently walks alongside the rest of the family, suggests she has high status and power – though King Vegeta’s cape hiding her face does take away from some of that. Tarble being so weak might suggest that Queen Vegeta isn’t too strong, either. That said, Goku and Raditz’s Power Levels were also worlds apart despite being siblings, so King Vegeta may not have thought anything of it.
Exploring Vegeta’s Family & Past is the Natural Next Step For His Story
Dragon Ball introducing Vegeta’s mother could be Toyotarou’s way of hinting at what’s to come once the Dragon Ball Super manga returns. The series is reaching a point where Vegeta is arguably becoming more important than Goku. If nothing else, he’s stronger by the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and consistently gets the richest character development from saga to saga. The Black Frieza Saga could finally place Vegeta front and center as he confronts the man who ruined his life.
A Black Frieza Saga where Vegeta is the main point of view character makes perfect sense. He has the deepest connection to Frieza out of the Z-Fighters, has never beaten him before, and their relationship would allow Dragon Ball Super to explore Vegeta’s past via flashbacks (like the Bardock flashback in the Granolah the Survivor Saga). Toyotarou could be setting audiences up for Queen Vegeta appearing in the manga down the road.
