As someone who has only played New Leaf and New Horizons and didn't like either of them, I'm honestly hoping that the next Animal Crossing game will be more like City Folk, because everything I've heard about that game makes it sound exponentially more interesting and engaging to me. Maybe I'm in the minority with that opinion, but that's just how I feel.

When crocs first came on the scene they used to cause me physical pain whenever I saw them, but after years of over exposure I’ve built up a tolerance 😅 I’ll admit, having the little houses on your shoe like you’re a giant animal crossing map is a lil bit fun… but not enough for me to buy crocs🤣 But I could totally do something with the little badge-thingies🤔🙂

They don't need a new game, they need to do an expansion where you can fly to a city and bring back previous NPC's selling new things.
Something that I feel is worth noting is the fact that Animal Crossing shares its devs with Splatoon. Looking at it, that’s not an issue- until you realise that they’re clearly not done with Splatoon 3. They launched a performance update, 30+ new weapon kits and new badges. Plus, they’re still re-running splatfests. ACNH was completely abandoned in favour of Splatoon 3, and clearly, the hype hasn’t died down. This might lead to further delays in Animal Crossing development, as the devs are preoccupied. Anyways, just a thought.
Crocs
Crocs, which I will not be getting. Because I do not wear them. But they are very cute. I do hope the Nintendo Direct includes at least a mention of Animal Crossing. It's hard to believe they are still selling so many copies of New Horizons, though! Hopefully, that means they are hard at work on a new one and plan to announce in the next couple of years.
I'm hoping for the direct also. Im also considering the crocs.
Doesn’t matter if they announce something or not. I personally think it’s inevitable. Nintendo KNOWS how much we all love Animal Crossing. For some, it’s a way of life.
Personally, I’d love to see a DLC update for Switch and Switch 2 that could provide QoL updates for the current game. May not actually happen, but wishful thinking I guess. 😂
I watch Kit and Krysta but you could play a drinking game with how many times they mention “when we were at Nintendo” but guess what you’re not anymore. So I’m like meh with their opinion on Animal Crossing

I am not a crocs girlie but the Animal Crossing ones I will probably get. I want to wear them when I got to the Nintendo Museum in Japan come next spring.

About the possible Nintendo Direct, it's worth mentioning the Pokemon Presents that was announced in May is on Tuesday the 22nd of July (so 8 days from this comment). Since Nintendo Directs are typically a Wednesday affair, its possible that we could be seeing it the day after, on the 23rd, but the timing still feels odd. I'd imagine it'll either be this Wednesday next Thursday (the 24th) or the final Wednesday of the month (the 30th).
