An Official Dungeons & Dragons Theatrical Production Is Coming

The world of Dungeons & Dragons is vast and multifaceted. For 50 years, it has inspired imaginative fantasy adventures, been featured in actual play shows, and has been adapted into TV shows and feature-length films. Now, a Dungeons & Dragons theatrical production is underway.

According to an official press release, the first Dungeons & Dragons theatrical production is called The Twenty-Sided Tavern. The show will be a theatrical fantasy experience, one where the audience participates in the story.

This participation will be done via Gamiotics, a browser-based app that allows you to vote on how the story will go. What characters will appear, and what experiences will they explore? The show will feature five actors, over 30 characters, and an expansive story within the Forgotten Realms setting full of riddles, puzzles, and combat.

For those seeking a more daring experience, the show will even include parts where audience members can join the action onstage, testing their skills through a variety of trivia, charades, and Fantasy Beer Pong.

The Dungeons & Dragons theatrical production is being handled by David Carpenter, Sarah Davis Reynolds, and David Andrew Laws of Curious Hedgehog and Showpath Entertainment. The latter’s production credits include The Spongebob Musical, The Paddington Bear Experience, and Monopoly Lifesized.

“As passionate gamers and D&D players, the partners at Curious Hedgehog set off on a quest to redefine what a live interactive experience can be. What started as a D&D-style RPG onstage with folding tables and a box of props has grown beyond our wildest imagination,” says David Carpenter. “From day one we forged a deep connection with gamers and non-gamers alike by bringing them a whole new type of experience by fans for fans. When David Hutchinson at Showpath and the Hasbro team approached us about this collaboration, it was a perfect match. Together we are taking experiential entertainment to the next level.”

Casting for the Dungeons & Dragons theatrical production is currently underway. Previews begin April 19, and official shows begin May 5th. Plans to launch a national tour is already underway.

Tickets will be available for presale on February 29 on The Twenty-Sided Tavern’s website.
