Netflix has shared a brand new update about its upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series, confirming that production has officially started in Rome, Italy. The adaptation is based on Ubisoft‘s bestselling video game franchise.
What do we know about the setting and plot of the Assassin’s Creed Netflix show?
The latest update confirmed that Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed show will tell an original story that takes place in Rome, 64 AD. The cast and crew are filming at Cinecittà Studios, as production is set to expand upon the established Ancient Rome back lot to immerse filming in this time period.
“The series is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. It follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny,” reads the official logline.
In addition, the streamer has also announced the addition of four more recurring cast members, including Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (Foundation), Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Mirren Mack (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow). They are joining previously announced cast members Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Claes Bang, Nabhaan Rizwan, Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, and Corrado Invernizzi. Further details about their respective characters are still under wraps.
Assassin’s Creed is executive-produced by showrunners Roberto Patino and David Wiener, alongside Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, Genevieve Jones from Ubisoft Film & Television, and Matt O’Toole. Since its debut in 2007, the video game franchise has sold more than 230 million units worldwide. This won’t be the first time Assassin’s Creed has received a live-action adaptation, as Sony Pictures previously adapted it for the big screen in 2016 with Michael Fassbender leading the cast.
