’90s kids, rejoice: a re-release of “Backyard Football ’99″ is set to debut in September from Playground Productions.
The game will launch Sept. 9 across Steam and mobile platforms. It’s now available for pre-order on the App Store and Google Play and for wishlist on Steam.
Returning players to “Backyard Football ‘99” include Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Drew Bledsoe, Jerry Rice, John Elway, Randall Cunningham and Steve Young.
The relaunch of “Backyard Football ‘99” comes on the heels of Playground Productions acquiring the rights to the beloved ’90s sports game franchise last year, which was followed by the re-releases of “Backyard Baseball ’97,” “Backyard Baseball ‘01” and “Backyard Soccer ’98.”
All of the rebuilt “Backyard” games have been developed by Mega Cat Studios, who was commissioned by Playground to reverse engineer the original CD-ROM titles for modern platforms.
Playground is looking to expand the “Backyard Sports” franchise beyond the re-release of the existing titles to include a new game, as well as the potential for projects across TV and film.
“’Backyard Football ‘99′ made me a football fan for life,” Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett said. “From learning plays to managing teams, this game made football accessible, fun, and exciting for all ages. I am so proud to bring it back in time for football season.”
Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Marino, who added his vocal talents and likeness to “Backyard Football ’99,” added: “Bringing this game back to a new generation of fans and reconnecting with the OGs makes me so excited at this moment in time. This moment is ripe for introducing these games because kids today crave connection more than ever, and games like these offer a fantastic platform to experience the fun and excitement of the sport I’ve loved for so long.”
