Baldur’s Gate 3 Devs Receive “Threats” Over Broken Mods

Larian Studios announced that it’s working on official mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 last week, even bringing them to consoles. For now, they’re unofficial third-party add-ons developed by the community, which means that when official updates roll out for the game itself, they often break. That’s par for the course with modding, but some fans are sending threats to Larian over it.

“We’ll be talking in depth about what our mod support will look like soon,” director of publishing Michael Douse tweeted (as reported by GamesRadar). “Been working on it since launch. As always, we’ll discuss it in our way with our community. Threats and toxicity against our devs and community teams will only harm the conversation. Please stop that.

“This is a game that went from two million players to way over ten in a very short space of time, so it’s natural the conversation becomes muddier and more complex. But in order to maintain the same level of dialogue, we need people to understand that these conversations take time.”

For some, broken mods are a minor inconvenience – cosmetic tweaks are disabled and quality-of-life cheats like weightless gold revert to normal. For others, who use mods to implement new species or spells, it breaks the game entirely.

99 percent of our community are the absolute best and it’s because of them – thankfully – that my community team persevere. But I suppose it was inevitable that when you have a city, a few bad eggs will start a fire.

The only option is to wait for modders to update their add-ons or start a new playthrough without mods. This is how every game works, from Skyrim to Stardew Valley to The Witcher 3. Regardless, some fans are annoyed at their playthroughs breaking, taking their frustration out on Larian despite said updates fixing game-breaking bugs and glitched cutscenes while implementing long-requested quality-of-life features.

It’s also worth noting that mods are completely optional and by downloading them, you’re accepting the risk that things may break. Larian has no control over that unless it ceases updates entirely. But with a list of known problems to work on and ambitious plans to officially support mods and bring them to consoles, that won’t happen anytime soon.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
