When To Pick Fighter

If you’re new to Dragon’s Dogma’s combat system, choosing a Fighter is a good idea – especially if you’d prefer a different vocation for yourself.

When your Pawn has the Fighter vocation, you can engage in combat from a distance and worry less about enemy aggro. Your Pawn will draw their attention while you deal damage.

When To Pick Mage

Mages are versatile and vital to your party. Assigning your main Pawn the Mage vocation is the best choice you can make. Mages are well-rounded and powerful, wielding both offensive and restorative spells. If you plan on taking damage in combat, a Mage Pawn can heal you.

Mages lack offense when they just start out, but elemental control cannot be underestimated.


It will take longer to build a Mage to their full potential, but it’s well worth the investment. Additionally, a Mage cannot defend themselves, so it will be up to you to create a party composition that can support them – and you’ll likely be taking more damage to draw enemies away.

When To Pick Thief

Thieves are nimble, agile attackers that deal the most damage per second. Their mobility allows them to avoid incoming enemy attacks, which is good because they lack a solid defense.

Theives have the only dodge mechanic in the game, so they make for useful allies.


It’s best to pick the Thief vocation for your Pawn if you want additional support in combat, or if you plan to take on a boss fight. They’re not the best pick for a Pawn if you’re just starting out, but advanced players may welcome the challenge and grit of working with a Thief.

When To Pick Archer

When To Switch Vocations
