Borderlands Fans Take Stand Against CEO Randy Pitchford’s Price Comments

Summary

  • The larger Borderlands community has rallied against Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford after his recent comments regarding the game’s potential price.
  • Taking to Reddit, droves of fans have vowed to either skip Borderlands 4 entirely or wait until the game is on a massive discount.
  • Many believe his comments were unnecessary, and Pitchford has since walked back his comments.

A few days after his post about “real fans” finding a way to pay $80 for Borderlands 4 went viral, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has sort of walked back his initial comments in a semi-apology post.

In a post shared on social media, Pitchford said it wasn’t “his intent” to take fans for granted, and he was “humbled” by the response, though the words “I,” “am” and “sorry” are nowhere to be found. Either way, it seems like the damage has been done, as Borderlands fans took a stand against Pitchford online, with many saying they won’t be buying the game on day one.

Gearbox Software founder Randy Pitchford has landed himself in hot water while talking about Borderlands 4.

Over on the r/Borderlands sub, fans voiced their displeasure with Pitchford in droves. Many said they’d be skipping out on Borderlands 4 entirely, while others said they’d wait for a major price cut before considering it.

“You can keep the game Randy,” one gamer wrote. “I’ll go play some other free-to-play or indie game.”

Elsewhere, fans recalled how quickly the base versions of past Borderlands games went on sale, along with the inevitable “Ultimate” edition that bundles all DLC. “Yeah, I’ll play eventually probably, but I will wait until I can pay a lower price for the whole game (including) DLC,” one user wrote in response.

“I was considering buying the game launch week or month, buying full price essentially,” another player said, “Now? I’m waiting until a deal next year.”

Of course, there are players who’ve said they’re out altogether after Pitchford’s comments. “I’m not buying it BECAUSE he said that,” a fan shared. The rest of the thread is filled with similar sentiments, making it abundantly clear that words can have consequences. With the game not due out until early September, it’ll be a while before any impact will be reported.
