Broken Roads Release Date Marries Mad Max and Disco Elysium Next Month

Publisher tinyBuild and developer Drop Bear Bytes have announced a Broken Roads release date.

The post-apocalyptic RPG, which marries the dusty atmosphere of Mad Max with the philosophically complex stylings of Disco Elysium, arrives on PC and consoles on April 10th.

Originally due to launch sometime in 2022, the game was subsequently delayed to 2023, then again to 2024. Versus Evil was originally set to publish Broken Roads, but after the studio closed its doors in December, owner tinyBuild took over publishing duties.

Broken Roads purports to offer a “genre-redefining morality system”.

Drop Bear Bytes says Broken Roads was “born of a love for traditional computer role-playing” in games like TyrannyBaldur’s Gate, and the aforementioned Disco Elysium.

It features a morality system known as the Moral Compass, which promises to allow you to approach moral quandaries in unique and nuanced ways.

If your character leans towards utilitarianism, for instance, then they may be prone to sacrificing individuals to benefit wider society, while Machiavellian characters may instead choose to scheme and manipulate others for their own personal benefit.

Unlike Disco ElysiumBroken Roads will feature a combat system, but it won’t restrict you to rigid notions of character class, allowing you to pick and choose abilities that suit you.

All of this takes place against the backdrop of the Australian outback, where you’ll explore both “treacherous desert regions” and “decaying urban centers”, according to the devs.

Broken Roads looks like it’s shaping up to be one to watch if you’re a fan of some of the classic CRPGs outlined above, so make sure to add it to your Steam wishlist if you’re interested in checking it out.

You’ll be able to check out Broken Roads when it arrives on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on April 10th. A demo for the game is available right now on PC if you want to get a flavor for it ahead of launch.
