Black Ops 7 is significantly underperforming amid historic low user review scores, while post-launch support has completely failed to draw in new players. A lot is riding on next year’s Call of Duty, to put it lightly, but new leaks cast doubt that Infinity Ward will pull the series out from this hole.
According to @TheGhostOfHope, “Modern Warfare 4 in its current state is a complete copy of Modern Warfare II except for no perk charging system and less ADS/slide penalties.” While it might’ve reviewed well with critics, Modern Warfare 2 (2022) is one of the worst-reviewed games in the series among players, with a staggeringly low user score of 5.3 on Metacritic.
Unsurprisingly, fans aren’t jazzed about the idea of Infinity Ward reheating old leftovers, especially considering that Modern Warfare 3 (2024) drew backlash just two years ago for being little more than overpriced DLC. If @TheGhostOfHope is to be believed, then this is far from the fresh direction that the series needs to revitalise itself.
Call Of Duty Hasn’t Learned Its Lesson
Just last week, in response to Black Ops 7’s low sales and even worse reviews, Activision announced that it would cease back-to-back releases going forward to prevent the series from going stale.
Black Ops 7 showed the cracks in the current model even moreso than Modern Warfare III, in part because of the unusually steep competition provided by Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders, yet ending back-to-back releases means little if the new game is another rehash anyway.
Worse yet, next year, Call of Duty has to contend with Grand Theft Auto 6, which, by all accounts, will be the biggest video game launch in history. A repeat of a three-year-old game won’t cut it, and only goes to show how little Activision has learned.
Of course, leaks are always worth taking with a grain of salt, and @TheGhostOfHope could be wrong, but the community isn’t taking the news well. Many argue that Activision should instead continue supporting Black Ops 7 in place of a new Call of Duty, allowing Infinity Ward more time to develop a new game, rather than rushing into the GTA 6 firestorm half-cocked.
C’mon Acti, if there was ever a time for Chronicles 2.
Others, meanwhile, have declared that “MW4 is going to be the WORST CoD of all time,” begging Infinity Ward not to follow through with this idea. If the plan really is just Modern Warfare 2 again, it’s already clear how players will react.
