Capcom hack sees almost 12M user records stolen

A while back, Capcom suffered a major security breach, leading to employee details leaking online, alongside other business-related documentation. Now, Capcom has suffered another breach, but this time, the details of just shy of 12 million user accounts leaked instead.

Capcom confirmed the breach earlier this week, saying that a bad actor accessed the information of 11,774,247 accounts. The attacker was able to get access to email addresses, their IP addresses for each log-in session, as well as other information, such as the date and time the account was created, and their log-in history.

On top of that, some of these users also had their country / region information, date of birth, gender and nickname accessed. The attacker also went on to change the passwords for nearly 200 user accounts, though Capcom says no passwords actually leaked as part of this breach.

Capcom also says that no payment information was affected in the breach either, so while this could lead to some very convincing phishing attempts, it shouldn’t have an impact beyond that.

In its statement, Capcom said it “takes this matter extremely seriously and will continue its detailed investigation”, it is also implementing measures to “prevent recurrence and further strengthen its security framework”.

KitGuru Says: Be on the lookout for any suspicious emails claiming to be from Capcom.
