Cities: Skylines 2 Starts on Road to Redemption With Big Update and Mods

Today publisher Paradox Interactive and developer Colossal Order released a big patch for Cities: Skylines 2, and it certainly feels like the beginning of a redemption arc.

The update numbered 1.1.0f1 certainly qualifies as the largest released for the game as of yet, and it introduces the much-awaited modding platform and support.

Another very important element is the fact that performance has been improved across the board, especially on less capable PCs. This is relevant, considering that many complaints about the game were about performance issues.

Crashes to desktop were another big factor in the game’s poor reception, and this patch improves these as well, on top of fixing a ton of bugs.

The system that calculates land value was another pain point, and the update brings considerable improvements, including a cap to the bonus factor and a useful tooltip that displays the value of a specific plot when hovering on it with the mouse.

The patch also introduces the first DLCs which were also part of the Ultimate Edition’s promise, the Asset Pack – Beach Properties and the Deluxe Relax Station for your in-game radio. They can be purchased separately for $9.99 and $4.99 if you so wish.

You can watch a trailer showing off the new assets below and find the full patch notes on the official forums.

It’s worth mentioning that modding support is still in beta, and a big part of the Cities: Skylines modding, which is additional assets like building and decorations. We don’t yet know when support for these will be added, albeit it’s coming.

Cities: Skylines 2 is currently available only for PC, but we already know that PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports are also coming. For the moment, we have no release date. All versions were initially planned for a simultaneous release, but the console versions have been delayed.

While the PC version was flawed by serious issues, it still managed to sell over a million copies

Having played a build of the game at Gamescom, I actually found it very promising, and considering how great the original Cities: Skylines has become over the years, I hope that Colossal Order will manage to steer the game through the route to redemption.
