CD Projekt Red‘s open-world action blockbuster game, Cyberpunk 2077, is getting a live-action movie adaptation. The action-adventure RPG initially launched in 2020. Despite its rough debut, the game eventually became a fan favorite.
A Cyberpunk 2077 movie is currently in development at Paramount Pictures, according to Deadline. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for the G.I. Joe series and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, will serve as the producer alongside CD Projekt Red. An update on the director hasn’t been confirmed at the moment.
Plot details for the live-action film remain under wraps. However, it’s expected to mostly follow the game’s storyline, set in the futuristic metropolis of Night City in California.
Cyberpunk 2077’s massive success makes it a natural Hollywood target
Cyberpunk 2077 has won over fans in the nearly six years since its release. Ever since its original announcement more than a decade ago, it has been one of the most anticipated releases. However, its launch was met with an underwhelming response because of glitches, unexpected bugs, and many other problems.
The development team worked to fix the issues and eventually delivered a more polished dystopian sci-fi open-world experience with update 2.0 in 2023. The game was followed by its first major expansion, Phantom Liberty, in 2023. Fans responded positively to the improvements and the developers’ continued support, which coincided with stronger player reception and continued sales.
The Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million copies. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. The sales numbers certainly make the game an attractive property for Paramount.
Besides CD Projekt Red’s game, Paramount is also developing two other major video game adaptations. Its Street Fighter film will hit theaters on October 16, 2026, while its Call of Duty film is scheduled for 2028. Based on Activision’s Call of Duty franchise, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
The Cyberpunk 2077 movie does not yet have an official release date.
