Destiny 2 Lightfall: How to Get and Use Terminal Overload Keys

One of the many activities new to Destiny 2 Lightfall is Terminal Overload. It’s one of the best ways to get Neomuna weaponry and grind Vex and Shadow Legion Cabal kills. To reap the spoils, you’ll need Terminal Overload Keys.

Completing the activity awards two chests. One provides generic loot, the other a chance at Neomuna gear. But you’ll need a Terminal Overload Key to open it. Thankfully, getting them is easy enough, though don’t expect to be swimming in them. We’ll cover everything about Terminal Overload Keys in this guide.

Where to Find Terminal Overload Keys

To get Terminal Overload Keys:

  • Complete the Lightfall campaign.
  • Once that’s done, head into the Archives in the Hall of Heroes.
  • Progress the Archvist’s questline until you unlock the Stargazer quest.

Complete the first two steps of Stargazer — finishing a single Terminal Overload activity and defeating a specific Vex Hydra in the Esi Terminal — to reach step three, where you’ll complete various activities across Neomuna.

You can earn Keys for this step, and at any other point in the future, by doing the following activities.

  • Public events.
  • Looting chests (Region chests don’t count).
  • Completing Patrols.

You won’t get a Key every time you complete an activity, so try to double or triple up on them whenever possible. Have a Patrol active while participating in a Public event, and keep an eye out for chests as you fight.

Once you get your first Terminal Override Key, head into the activity. You’ll have everything you need to progress Stargazer, a requirement for future questlines.

There is also one other method of obtaining Keys, but it’s a little tougher.

Finish the Nimbus Daily Bounty available after reaching Reputation Rank 13. This daily is tied to Terminal Overload, but completing it always rewards a Key.

How to Use Keys

Terminal Overload Keys have two primary uses. The first is obvious: opening the locked chest at the end of a successful Terminal Overload activity.

The second is earning a Key to pull the Vex Incursion Countermeasures Nimubs Weekly Bounty. You’ll need to complete the Bluejay Archivist quest to even access the Weekly, but completing the Partition activity unlocks a Pinnacle reward.

Now you have everything you need to know about getting and using Terminal Overload Keys. As one of the more valuable consumables in Lightfall, you’ll want to always have one in your inventory. For more coverage of Destiny 2’s latest expansion, check out our D2 guides hub.
